Marching Band Programs
What instrument to switch to from flute for college marching band?
I LOVE marching band like more than anything I’ve ever done.
And I really like Ohio University becuase it has a REALLY good photography program there and I looked up their band on youtube and was instantly impressed.
I play the flute in my highschool marching band and to a HUGE dissappointment Ohio University uses basically everything except the flute :’(
I’m a senior so I have limited time to master a new instrument but I have great motivation to do so. As far as switching instruments…what would be the best/easiest instrument for me to switch to?

Clarinets
Alto Saxes
Tenor Saxes
Mellophones
Trumpets
Trombones
Baritones
Tubas
Drumline
And I have also been playing piano for about 12 years now so I’m not “illiterate” when it comes to music lol

There’s a couple of ways to go here.
First my recommendation is that you should try several different instruments out with somebody you know that played them. If you go ask your high school director, he’d probably be happy to let you “try on” different instruments and help you with your decision. After playing the different instrument, pick the one that you like the most or that feels the most natural to you.
Most flutes that I know double on clarinet or mellophone for marching band. Why that is … I can’t say for sure. I’m guessing that clarinet is an easy transition because the fingerings are so similar. Mello is probably because they need alot of them, but there aren’t many players around.
My thoughts on the switches:
Clarinets – fingerings are similar to flute and the director always needs a million of them.
Sax – I don’t recommend this unless the sax just seems really cool to you. If that’s the case … go for it.
Mello – For some reasons flutes seem to be able to play this instrument well.
Low Brass – Since flutes usually have great air flow/support … this points you toward these instruments. However, since many flutes are smaller in stature, this may not be the way to go.
If the marching band uses a “pit” then you might want to consider “keyboard percussion.” The music is often written in the same range as flute and the sound is similar. Depends on how coordinated you are.
