Marching Band Drumsticks
Marching band– flute to snare?
I’m about to go into the ninth grade, and I’m marching with the band, as a flute. I’ve been playing the flute since fourth grade. I’m getting pretty bored with it, not to mention frustrated. (I can’t play half the notes my band director throws at me, and I also can’t physically move my mouth fast enough.) I was thinking that I would love to try a new marching instrument, and I’m thinking the snare drum. For next year, of course, which would be tenth grade. This brings up lots of questions, though. Could it work for me to start learning basics on a practice pad while I save money for an actual drum? Any recommendations on what book(s) to buy? And lastly, does putting duct tape on the butt (for lack of a better word) of your drumsticks mess with your grip in any way? 
I’m a music major in college and ran into a similar issue. My major instrument is oboe but on our degree requirements we have to do marching band. I marched all through HS on piccolo and my first year of college (music school). After getting to college drill and failing at it (foot work) miserably, my band director put me on snare because for football they don’t have to move.
I honestly would not recommend snare. If you want to do percussion/be in that section crash symbols are MUCH easier. Assuming you’re female- in music school they will never let a female do snare or bass in a marching setting unless she is 5’5+ and over 130 pounds. The harnesses and the actual snares/bass are HEAVY, painful and you can do a lot of damage.
Also, you just can’t use any snare drum in parades or on the field. The ones inside you are probably used to seeing (They are silver/metal)- unless you come from a very poor city- they aren’t used outdoors nor can they be used in a competition setting (in this state at least). A real marching snare- most use Yamaha or Pearl brand run over a thousand easy. You wont be able to practice on the real thing and it just wont be close.
DO NOT tape you sticks, wrap string on it, etc. if you want to decorate, color on them with a permanent marker or buy sticks with a design already. The tape + extra weight messes with the vibrations and makes the stick disproportional- the stick wont bounce correctly and its just not smart.
Another thing you have to think about is what is your band director going to say? Did he already say you can switch? Percussion competition is high and the marching parts are limited. You’re going to be stuck when there’s people who are a lot better than you- not to mention they’ll be angry if they have to play cow bell because you took their snare spot.
You would honestly be better off working with a flute tutor (like a senior) or a private instructor. Look at what the flute’s made of, its brand and its characteristics. Is it a closed hole, offset, student flute with a C foot or is it the more advanced inline, Sterling silver, open hole B foot kind? Part of it could be you’re growing out of your baby flute and its time for a new one. Google the Armstrong 800B- It’s what I upgraded to not long after starting and its pretty affordable. In music school we talk about students switching and how to approach it- and usually band directors are hesitant to let students go from melodic instruments to percussion unless the student has bad pneumonia of they break their instrument. Percussion is used for emergency settings like that.
