Basics in Choosing the Right Wedding Songs

Everybody knows that music is THE universal language. Some even prompted to note that we may have differing views, but music can definitely unite our souls. That’s how important music is, not just in everyday life, but of course during the most important day in your life, YOUR WEDDING.

Some of you may wonder what type of music should be played while you march down the aisle or even have your first dance as husband and wife at the reception. So many songs to choose from, right? Where do you begin then to stream down the long list of probable songs that can be played at your wedding day?

Check out this checklist to guide you through your music selection for your wedding day:

1.    KNOW FIRST YOUR WEDDING CEREMONIES
Due to the various kinds of wedding available for couple today, you must have the list of ceremonies that will be included in your special day. (Please refer to our other article about the different ceremonies that you might want to add into your own wedding.) Once you have finalized the ceremonies, then you can actually choose songs that will suit every step of the ceremony.

Example to this: Processional – choose songs that conveys the meaning of such ceremony, like the classic ENDLESS LOVE by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross or Celine Dion’s BECAUSE YOU LOVE ME.

2.    FIND THE RIGHT DJ
This could make or break any wedding reception, choosing the right DJ to mix your songs and make the right segue of your preferred music. One way to find the right one to do the job would be to ask wedding coordinators and see for yourself while this DJs perform during a wedding. This will be a good gauge to his/her performance. Once you have chosen the right person, make sure to keep communication open always. Let him/her know of your preferences and the kind of feel that you would want your wedding to have. Don’t be intimidated by DJs who opted to play their own type of music rather than following the wants of the couple to be wed. Remember, this is your wedding, and not his/her. But of course, if you have the right budget, then you may also want to hire a good band that can play your extensive song playlist. Look around your area to find out rates of bands that will be within your budget. Again, wedding coordinators can help you in this quest.

3.    SAMPLE SONGS OVER AND OVER
Even if you think that a certain song can be suitable in such ceremony, it is still wise to consider to play that particular song over and over again, to let you have the feel of the said song. Listen to it through your mp3 or in your computer at the office. In this way, you can truly choose songs that will suit every mood of each ceremony. You would know if it is the right music for such particular moment, because you can picture yourself doing such activity while listening to the music.

4.    UNDERSTAND YOUR GUESTS MOOD
Always keep in mind, that especially during wedding receptions, you are not just pleasing yourself and your partner but your guests as well. Look over your guest list and find out the majority of the age demographics. It could be that majority of your guests are aunts and uncles of both sides of the family, then it would be best to choose songs of their era. Especially when the DJ started to invite guests to dance the night away, let the music then truly entice your guests to participate in the fun. There’s no better way to gauge the success of your wedding reception but through the knowledge that your guests truly strut their dancing skills. And this is where the right music comes in. You can coordinate with your DJ to look for songs that will cater to the preferences of your guests.

5.    KEEP COMMUNICATION OPEN
If you opted to hire a wedding coordinator, then make sure that you, your wedding coordinator and your dj or band must keep communication line open. Let them be properly coordinated as to which ceremony a particular song will be played. Many wedding receptions fail because no proper harmonization of ideas was done in the first place. Always keep in mind that this special day will only happen once, therefore it must be done according to what you would want to remember it for, beautiful and memorable.
